A new study that clearly suggests chimpanzee females are more likely to copulate with a male that has shared food with her in the past. The study claims the females have a sort of score keeping record and it may even be months before she copulates with the “sharing” male. The researchers say the reason the ‘sex for meat exchange’ has not been clearly shown in the past is because studies were looking for short term mating exchanges. They controlled for age and rank as well as females that males often came into contact with. Meat sharing is a widely discussed issue in the primate community so it is good to see studies making their way to mainstream media as it helps raise awareness for future studies and conservation.
